Why do we place a stone on a grave marker when we visit the cemetery?  Is it a sign of respect, a religious law, or just a tradition?

We leaves stones on top of head stones as a sign of having been there.

Stones are used because they will remain wherever they are placed and not fly off in the wind or move when it rains. It is a custom, rather than a rule or and obligation.
