May Editor's Comments
Kudos to you, Michael, for Megillah. Last evening I browsed and enjoyed for quite a while. What creativity, both in content and layout. Your lead article about the place of religion in the public weal is right on. I remember an As It Happens interview a couple months ago; with one of the attorneys working for equality for lifelong unions. She made some of the same points as you, though not nearly as eloquently. But she intrigued me with the thought of approaching the law from the standpoint of churches as well as individuals, fighting hard to guarantee the right of particular churches to define "marriage" however they wish within their flocks, and in return they would drop schemes to impose their preference upon the nation. I surely wish that approach could take hold here. The Christian Right here in Minnesota is trying to disrupt the current legislative session with cries for a Male-Female marriage law. But, cross my fingers, their shrill voices seem to be falling to the wayside. But they'll come back again, any day, I'm sure. Fortunately, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate stated categorically, "that divisive bill will not reach the Senate floor this session." Thanks again for hooking me into megillah.
Editor-> Dear Steve, Welcome to our Megillah family. Your support of my editorial is greatly appreciated. It sounds as if Minnesota is somewhat more progressive at this point in time than many other areas of the U.S. Meanwhile, we have our fingers crossed here in Canada that the government will not collapse before this legislation is passed. Warmest wishes, Michael
