     Government Response to the Disaster
That the U.S. forces are "doing their best" in the present situation is, to quote a man I usually do not agree with, "not axxeptable." I'm sorry. This disaster was predicted as possible for decades. With all the military rehearsals there essentially was NO MAJOR DISASTER PLAN IN PLACE--despite the Patriot Act and FEMA and all the stuff in case there was a terorist action. As of this writing they have NO COMMUNICATION and NO WAY OF LISTING THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE. What are those satellites up there for? Why weren't there emergency power generators in place and the many many other things that should have been done to prevent what we see now. The Germans used the latest ibm technology to KEEP TRACK OF EVERY PERSON, and as we know, the trains ran in time, thanks to the computer technology of the'40s. When I was four years old in Vienna, I was present during the Anschluss. I knew then that people like me (my friend Hasie precisely) were Jews and did not have Visa's and would die. That I had a visa and was a Jew and would go back to the U.S. Since then I have read that the governments did not know, the major Jewish organizations did not know, and as boats approached Gibralter and New York, THEY WERE TURNED BACK. I came to a conclusion probably around 7 that GROWNUPS REALLY DO KNOW ABOUT EVERYTHING but they don't care about the people who are being, going to be, have been killed. That's why I have a long history of social activism. It's not bad because it happened to MY PEOPLE, it's bad because it happens to PEOPLE. As I sit in my 60% black neigborhood where I have argued for years that things can't all be blamed on being black, and that unity and friendship (particully Jewish-Black) has a historical background and is necessary to solve things, etc. etc. and watch those almost all black faces on the TV, how can I continue to live among them? We died in trains and camps; they are dying in the streets, in the houses, in the flood, in sports stadia, waiting on bridges and buses are being turned back. Try waiting in a bus, on a bridge, in a railroad car, in a truck (if you are a Mexican immigrant), wherever, in the heat, without food or water, what happened to "Never again" or "It can't happen here?" I bet there are no Jews trapped in that mess. Ain't we smart?
Editor-> Shalom Judith, Your letter expresses many of the same thoughts that are haunting the minds of a huge number of people including myself. The government response to this disaster has been murderously incompetent and grossly inadequate. A fish starts rotting from the head, and to quote President Harry Truman, "The buck stops here." President Bush is at the very head of this rotting fish. Michael
