I am saddened by this award, because up until fairly recently
I had great respect for Senator Joe Lieberman. I took great pride in Mr.
Lieberman when he came within a whisker of becoming the first Jewish Vice
President of the United States. Joe was a true liberal, Democratic voice in the
Senate, who I believed always had the best interest of our country at heart. But
something has happened to our Joe in the past couple of years.
Senator Lieberman has joined the fast shrinking group of neocons who
continue to support the war with Iraq and is a strong proponent for spreading
that war into Iran. Back in 2002, Joe was far from alone in supporting President
Bush's call to arms against Iraq. The administration had sold the world a bill
of goods about those legendary "weapons of mass destruction," as well as
Saddam's advanced nuclear arms project. But when it became apparent that there
were no WMD in Iraq, as originally claimed, and increasing evidence that Iraq
had dismantled its nuclear weapons program several years earlier, the world and
the general population of the U.S. began to turn against this war in droves. The
vast majority of voters in the United States want this war to end, and has no
desire to see our country become engaged in an armed conflict with Iraq's
neighbour, Iran.
Joe Lieberman however sees great value in continuing this war. The fact that
over 4,000 American soldiers have been killed, thousands more wounded, many with
life changing injuries, and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and
children killed by our bombs and bullets, in a war based on lies, does not deter
Joe from his mission.
Not only does Senator Lieberman not care what the American people want, he has
gone so far as to support John McCain in this Presidential election. Joe claims
to be an Independent Democrat, a label he himself created, and yet he has turned
his back on the candidate from his old party. This of course, is his right, but
Joe takes his support to a truly obnoxious level. He had the temerity to stand
in front of an audience comprised of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs
Committee) members and lie about Barack Obama's lack of support for Israel. He
is using the same tactic of fear that Karl Rove and his crew employed in the
last two Presidential elections, in order to con voters into electing a
president who will keep us at war indefinitely with not just Afghanistan and
Iraq, but with Iran as well.
I do not pretend to understand what has happened to Senator Joe Lieberman. But
for the above reasons it is my sincere displeasure to name him June's Gantseh
Megillah Shmuck of the Month. |
