Laugh! Doctor's Orders

When the doctor told Mrs. Liebenbaum her check came back, she replied, "So did my arthritis."
(Old Jewish joke.)

Everyone knows the best comedians steal jokes. So it's no surprise Reader's Digest stole the "Laughter, the Best Medicine" idea from Sholem Aleichem, who said, "Laughter is good for you. Doctors prescribe it." And now The National Yiddish Theater/Folksbiene steals from them both and presents:

Laugh, Doctor's Orders!

Join us for night of laughter, mayhem and music as we honor three extraordinary people who love and support The National Yiddish Theater:

Mrs. Eta Chait Wrobel
The Lifetime Achievement Award
Eta was raised to love the Yiddish theater and is a long-time supporter of the Folksbiene. She's a Jewish activist and philanthropist, who was a Jewish partisan commander during the Holocaust and is the sole survivor of her family of ten.

Ambassador Arye Mekel
A fond and funny "fare-thee-well" to the Consul General Israel in New York Amb. Mekel, a senior diplomat with a distinguished record, returns to Israel in July after serving in New York for four years. He is a lover of Yiddish language, culture, and in particular the Yiddish Theater. As a good friend of the Folksbiene, we will give him a send-off he will not easily forget!

Dr. Jack Wimmer
The Yiddishkeit Award
A Holocaust survivor from Berlin, the doctor is an internationally acclaimed pioneer and inventor in the field of dentistry. We honor his success and devotion to Jewish continuity and Yiddish culture.

The National Yiddishe Theatre/Folksbiene is the only professional Yiddish theater company in the U.S. Our mission is to link the present to the 1,000 years of Yiddish culture that have sustained our people through the worst and best of times. Our actors are cultural ambassadors and historians, preserving Yiddish and Yiddishkeit that have contributed vastly to our own American pop culture—from vaudeville, to stand-up comedy to TV sit-coms…all of it rooted in the little theaters that once lined Second Avenue and were transplanted from the rich Yiddish culture of our parents and grandparents in Europe.

"I take my wife everywhere,'' said Henny Youngman, "but she always finds her way home.''
